Things to do in Indiana Lake Monroe

Lake Monroe in Indiana is surrounded by the Hoosier National Forrest, offering visitors the pleasure of outdoor activities, stunning views, and wildlife.

Lake Monroe

Lake Monroe is in Southern Indiana, near Bloomington, and it’s a popular destination for nature-lovers. I’ve been to Monroe Lake for camping, swimming, fishing, boating and kayaking. My friends and family love to spend time on Lake Monroe, enjoying the peaceful nature of this Indiana gem.
This blog post is about things to do in Lake Monroe Indiana, including my first-hand knowledge on how to plan a fun, recreational day out on the lake.

Monroe Lake in Bloomington Indiana

First, a little context to set the scene. Lake Monroe is a man-made lake, designed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1960 and made fully operational by 1965 as a local water source.
Today, Lake Monroe supplies drinking water for more than 130,000 people, according to the Indiana Department of Environmental Management. Monroe lake is a both a critical water supply source and a recreation destination. More than one million people visit Lake Monroe annually, generating over $40 million in recreational spending.

Things to do in Lake Monroe Indiana

Monroe Lake is a great destination for outdoor recreation in Southern Indiana. I recommend the Paynetown State Creation Area and Fairfax State Recreation Area for public access to activities and amenities, including the following:

  • Fishing / Ice Fishing
  • Fishing Piers
  • Hiking

Lake Monroe Boat Rentals

Lake Monroe Indiana Boat

Lake Monroe is perfect for a boat day! This serene lake surrounded by forrest lends itself to a relaxing day on the water or to get the party going.

For example, a group of my friends all pitched in on a boat rental in Lake Monroe. Here are some rental companies to consider: Lake Monroe Boat Rental Company or Two Herons Marina.

Our group outing was a fun-filler summer day where we all let loose swimming in the lake, driving the boat, and riding an inner tube on the water. If you’re visiting Lake Monroe with a group, you can’t go wrong with a boat rental for a memorable and affordable day on the water.

After the boat rental outing with friends, my boyfriend wanted more boat days out on the lake. So, he purchased a used boat on Facebook marketplace.

There are nine launch ramps, seven of which are free to launch your motorized or non-motorized watercraft in. Cutright Boat Ramp is free to use and has plenty of parking space and boat docks for your party to hop on the boat.

Two paid launch ramps are at the Fairfax State Recreation Area and the Paynetown State Recreation Area.

We took the boat out multiple times that summer, and on one occasion, we decided to bring our two dogs. Yes, Lake Monroe is pet friendly, and I’ve seen several other boaters on the water with their dogs as well as kids.

Of course, water safety is important. My dogs wore life jackets at all times when they were on the dock and on the boat. And yes, they do work for keeping your dog afloat in the water.

You can check out the dog lifejackets we use below and click here to order them on Amazon.

Is Lake Monroe safe to swim in?

Yes, Lake Monroe is safe to swim in. I swam in the lake when we were out boating and I can tell you that the water is surprisingly warm in the summer and yet still refreshing after being out in the sun. The lake is large, which means you have plenty of space to swim at a safe distance from other boats. The water is still and calm, but it’s necessary to take the right precautions when swimming.

The maximum lake depth is 54 feet with an average depth of 17.3 feet. However, it’s important to be aware of the water level at Lake Monroe around the time of your visit. The water rises with heavy rains, flooding nearby beaches and shorelines. Some public beaches may even closed due to high water levels. You can check for that information here.

In a statement, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources said, “Indiana Conservation Officers remind the public to always wear a life jacket when on or near any body of water and to always have a designated operator when boating.”

This statement came after a man drowned and died in Lake Monroe. The man fell off an inner tube without a lifejacket an he was recovered without life 30 feet underwater. Meanwhile, the boat driver was arrested for driving intoxicated.

Indiana law allows responsible alcoholic beverage consumption while boating. As always, drink responsibly. Driving a boat while intoxicated is not tolerated.

Fishing in Lake Monroe

Monroe Lake Fishing

Monroe Lake is a great fishing destination in Southern Indiana. The lake spans more than ten thousand acres, and according to Visit Bloomington, Monroe Lake is well-stocked with a varied selection of fish including Bluegill, bass, crappie, catfish and more.

Keep in mind, all people ages 18+ are required to have a fishing license to fish. Licenses can be purchased online, in person, or by mail from the Indiana DNR.

Fishing is allowed year-round — and Visit Bloomington says popular areas for casting a line are the Crooked Creek Ramp, the Cutright State Recreation Area, and the Pinegrove Ramp.

Paynetown SRA and Cutright SRA is where I recommend you go for fishing and all recreation on the Northeast end of Lake Monroe.

Chispa Tip: Make a stop at the Fishin’ Shedd to purchase live bait. This small convenience shop is located next to Paynetown SRA and sells outdoor essentials, fishing gear, food, ice, and more.

Camping in Lake Monroe Indiana

Indiana Camping Lake Monroe

Monroe Lake is a great camping destination in Southern Indiana. I recommend the Paynetown campsite, which is available for tent and RV camping. The best way to reserve a Monroe Lake campsite is online with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR). You can click here to check availability, look at a campground map, and make your reservation.

I love the Paynetown campground because you’re in the forrest, surrounded by tall trees, birds, and with easy access to Lake Monroe. The times that I’ve been here, I’ve selected campsites that have the lake right behind them, so I can easily launch my kayak. I also like that the Paynetown campsite is well-kept, with access to clean bathrooms, showers, and a convenience store.

The Paynetown campsite is also dog friendly, however, there are a lot of ticks in this forested area, so be sure to talk to your vet about flee & tick protection for your pets. It’s also necessary to check your pets for ticks after you return home from your camping trip to promptly remove any that have latched on.

Make sure you bring a hammock when camping at Lake Monroe in Indiana. Strong, tall trees make it easy to hang up your hammock and relax under the shade.

Conserving Lake Monroe

This blog post highlights Lake Monroe near Bloomington, Indiana as an outdoor recreation destination for boating, fishing, swimming, kayaking, and more. However, the ecological significance of Monroe Lake is worth considering for anyone like me, that enjoys this natural beauty.

For me, the forest landscape that surrounds the water makes Monroe Lake a uniquely beautiful destination in Indiana. In fact, it’s of the largest remaining intact forest blocks in the lower Midwest. The Lake Monroe Water Fund says Rare plants and wildlife species depend on the large forested tracts around Lake Monroe.

Area residents also depend on Lake Monroe for their water supply.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) built Monroe Lake in the early 1960s to be a hundred year water source.

The Lake Monroe Water Fund says, “at present all prior drinking water sources have been exhausted with the exception of Lake Monroe.”

The 2022 Lake Monroe Water Fund Report says there’s concern over health and water quality.

“Our reservoir has ‘grown up’ and is showing some ‘gray hair,’ including the nearly annual algal bloom at the end of summer causing bad tasting water and periodic recreational warnings. Costs of maintaining safe and delicious water have continued to accelerate.”

Lake Monroe Watershed Management Plan

Friends of Lake Monroe is an organization that seeks to conserve, protect, and sustain Lake Monroe as a source of community drinking water. Their 2022 Lake Monroe Watershed Management Plan identifies the top threats to water quality in Lake Monroe and provides an action plan to address those.

The plan states that protecting water quality in Lake Monroe will require reducing phosphorus, nitrogen, sediment, fertilizer and E. coli loads from entering the lake from the watershed.

A key strategy will be increasing the use of best management practices on agricultural, forested, residential, and urban land in the watershed, according to Friends of Lake Monroe.

Extending the Life of Lake Monroe

Recent sustainability programs and protections aim to extend the life of Lake Monroe as the sole water source for surrounding counties and to maintain it as key to the regional economy.

Below are some of the most recent programs for Lake Monroe conservation efforts:

  • Friends of Lake Monroe offers a septic system maintenance cost-share program from June 1 – July 31, 2024, with funding from the Monroe County Stormwater Board.
  • To reduce the runoff of nutrients that feed algal blooms, the Monroe Water Fund secured 2023 funding to provide 500+ landowners in Monroe County with a free soil test so they can minimize their use of fertilizer.
  • The Water Fund secured funding for 2023 programs that improve septic system awareness and function for 50 households in Brown County by providing $200 each toward their tank pumping or inspection costs.
